Our approach was to allow the building itself to become an important part of the visitor experience. Historic spaces and features were restored and reopened, while new interpretation was introduced to explain Gibraltar’s development as a fortress and the experiences of the soldiers and civilians who lived through repeated sieges.
During the works, previously hidden features were uncovered and incorporated into the exhibition, including historic drainage systems, cisterns, architectural details and graffiti dating back to the early 18th century. These discoveries helped shape the final interpretation and provided an opportunity to tell stories directly through the surviving fabric of the site.
Today, Gibraltar: A City Under Siege forms part of the Gibraltar Nature Reserve visitor experience, bringing a previously underused historic complex back into active use and giving visitors a new perspective on Gibraltar’s development as one of the most heavily fortified places in Europe.
